We Have A BBQ Next Week
We Have A BBQ Next Week
rubbafish by Colin Weston August 7th, 2001
All female 'alternative' bands are few and far between. The UK has Angelica, Twist and Venus In Furs to name but a few. The US has L7 , The Donnas as well as the hotly anticipated Bastard , the new project fronted by Courtney Love. Now, out of Orange County, there is another band to challenge the big guns. The Ampersand Theory sounded like the best bits of Splendora (the band who performed the the opening song for TV animation Daria for those who don't know) made more rock early in their career, but since the inclusion of their new bassist (and a year of progression) they have become an Angelica/Foo Fighters hybrid.

So, ladies, where did the band name come from?

We used to be called Ampersand but some band in Sweden? Switzerland? Or one of those "S" countries had the name already, so we changed it to The Ampersand Theory.

Give us a brief history lesson on the band

There will be a test afterwards... Robin-sand meets Natalie-sand meets Jennifer-sand meets Terese-sand... they explode and form Ampersand which then becomes a theory.

Who influenced you as a band and separately growing up?

Robin: Straight-Edge
Jen: Blues
Terese: Jazz
Natalie: New wave

Being an all female group, do you find it difficult to get away from the obvious comparisons to bands like L7 or Bikini Kill?

Try the Go-Go's! Why do we have to compare anyway? What do guys compare each other to? N'Sync?

Do you feel like a part of the LA music scene?

Not yet... but soon

How would you describe yourselves?

Menstrual

Do you have any A&R men swarming at the moment?

No, but if you know any send them our way!

Do you feel you have now found the settled line up needed for a full on assault?

Yes, we plan to mount a full forced attack on the world... & neighboring planets...

Do you all see the band as your career and lives?

And sexual relief... with our instruments of course!

What are the bands plans for the immediate future?

Well, we have a BBQ next week...

If you were all stranded on a desert island and could only have 1 item each, what would it be?

We all agree on smores and pop tarts.

Kittie: your views!

Meow.

Did you find the whole election fiasco as laughable as the rest of the world?

We were absent that day. Sorry.

And now Bush is in power, are you worried that someone with his kinda agenda is allowed in such a powerful position?

Bush and Dick... does anyone else see the trouble with the pairing of these words?

If you could tour with anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

Terese: Young Blondie
Jen & Robin: Radiohead
Natalie: New Order

Last thing before I leave you be for now... do any of the band have a weakness for british music journalists, especially the bassist?

Brit boys? Just read me the dictionary and I'll be happy. :0)
