Yesterday DrownedinSound caught up with a cape-clad These New Puritans by Clapton Common as the Southend quartet shot the video for their forthcoming single release, ‘Swords of Truth’, out at the back end of April. Ripped from the corpse of Beat Pyramid (review), the track has been re-worked out of its original album manner, into something more "droney" and "drawn out", apparently.
After a lunch that saw various delicacies scoffed and TNP’s chieftain, Jack Barnett, point an idle finger towards his current source of inspiration in Nigerian and Ivorian hip-hop (specifically the compilation Lagos Stori Plenti), it was out to skulk through Hackney reed marches.
Director Daniel Brereton (previously behind Late Of The Pier's ‘Bathroom Gurgle’) gave us a brief synopsis on the direction he was taking with the track:
“I wanted them to make something that was made up of different environments, a video montage and images because of the energy and movement in the song. The imagery is focused around that of the inlay from the album. I aspire to make something tangible and the lyrics give that depth to work round.”
So, who’s for some iconic heathside shots? Gather, hens...
These New Puritans emigrate like most British songbirds around this time of year to Texas and a brief US jaunt before a current standalone date at London's 93 Feet East on April 23.
