BLK JKS 'Mystery' - Listen

The rolling, vertiginous waves of distortion that usher in the title track of the South African band's debut EP offer little clue as to what comes next; some five minutes later and you've been swept gloriously adrift on an ocean of blitzing afro-rock and Linda Buthelezi's ecstatic hectoring. Blue Roses 'Rebecca' - Listen

You may already know Blue Roses and that striking voice, for it belongs to Northern songstress Laura Groves. This cut, from her soon-to-be-released full length debut, builds and builds before cantering off into the sunset towards a Bon Iver/Joanna Newsom ménage à trois. Rob Webb

Crystal Stilts 'The SinKing' - Listen

Choosing the standout track from Crystal Stilts' awesome debut Alight Of Night has been something of a daily dilemma for weeks now, but this slab of gothic surfgaze comes out on top today, if only for the way it makes retro sound so futuristic and unique. Dom Gourlay

Henry's Funeral Shoe 'Henry's Funeral Shoe' - Listen

A voice that's part priapic Ryan Adams, part soul-anguished Jack White drags itself over the grizzled guitar of deep South Wales blues. Henry's Funeral Shoe are two brothers recently signed by American label Alive from their MySpace impact alone. Expect an album and extensive gigs in the spring. Jane Oriel

Indica Ritual 'My Night Tangle' - Listen

Liverpool's best-kept secret announce themselves on 'My Night Tangle' - a song awash with John Carpenter-esque synth parts and guitar lines that seem willed from half-forgotten 80s bands. It's the sort of clever-clogs pop that can turn a city's secret into its calling card. Hari Ashurst

Micachu 'Lips' - Listen

A rusty grime track being scored with every sound that could be dreamed of in a whole fifty seconds. It's somehow the most complete DIY pop song this writer has ever heard, and there's no feeling that you've been shafted, rather, enlightened. Economy songwriting has a new champion. Brad Barrett

Stars And Sons 'In The Ocean'

This makes me think of a slightly more whimsical Eels, and not just because Mike Lord looks like the English E. Handclaps, a power chorus, and a bloody great guitar solo. Pretty much the perfect three minute indie-pop song. Luke Slater

Three Trapped Tigers '1' - Listen

Since the sad demise of iForward Russia!, the position of a band who name their songs after numbers has been vacant. Welcome, then, Three Trapped Tigers. '1' is symptomatic of the band's 65daysofstatic-esque aural assault: brutal and unforgiving guitars juxtapose ambient keys to create a red hot instrumental friction. David Renshaw

Urgent Talk 'Air Conditioning Politics' - Listen

Two-thirds of this Sheffield threesome used to be in a band called Heart Yeah, a sort of proto-Crystal Castles if you like, but this is so much better. Layers of shimmering electronica, 8-bit bleeps, the boy-girl call-and-response thing, an FX-laden viola... what more could you want, frankly? Rob Webb

Women 'Black Rice' - Listen

There's no such thing as a definitive song from these elusive, genre-dodging Canadians, but certainly the majestic 'Black Rice' is the closest their self-titled debut comes to a singalong anthem. Or it would do if you could make out any of the words rising raggedly from the misty chiming of its three immaculate Velvets-go-college-rock minutes. Andrzej Lukowski
