Punk is Dead
Punk is Dead
jbenwell by James Benwell April 17th, 2001
Let’s clear one thing up once and for all; punk isn’t what it used to be, this isn’t the 70s anymore! For one thing, punk is no longer about anarchy. No-one wants to overthrow the government…no-one cares! Yeah, there’s a few groups of throw backs out there who didn’t pay attention to the last twenty something years, but for the most part, punk is no longer a movement. There’s not even any ideals anymore. What was once a special, ‘elite’ group of society has become a trend just like anything else, played on by big name corporations such as MTV whenever they feel like it. What does all this mean? Well, it’s simple…punk is dead.

“Do what you want and not what other people tell you” – The motto of all punk generations gone by. Well, I’d call myself a punk but I still go to bed when my mum tells me to! So how do you define a punk in the year 2001? Call me jaded, but in my opinion, you’re judged on how baggy your jeans are, and how many bands you can name-check. I’m 17 years old and I’ve spent the last 3 years of my life immersing myself in the Birmingham punk scene- I’ve been to all the shows, supported all the bands, been to all the punk places. Well, on the outside, I’m no more punk than any other guy with a NOFX T-shirt and trousers that are too big for him!

I’m not really sure what I’m trying to say. This is a lament I suppose. I miss the feeling of being different, the way in which the scene made me feel special. I wish there was still a sense of community to being punk. Punks used to be united through their beliefs and ideals, now we’re united through the size of our trousers! Punk will still be around when the kids have got over their new found obsession with overly large clothes but I’m not sure what state it’ll be in…it won’t be good, that’s for sure.

Punk, R.I.P
