Tired Irie, Rolo Tomassi, Errors

First up: Tired Irie. This Leicester four-piece play jerk-punk for ADHD kids taken with the current stutter-riffs of Foals and stateside exponents of avant-rawk Battles and Q And Not U…‘Sumerian’ is the sort of instant-fix frolic that so few bands master the composing of, but this sprightly foursome appear to have licked.

Next along: Rolo Tomassi…these five young things craft the sort of cacophony comparisons to The Locust sell hella short. It’s wired, weird, wonderful: ‘w’ words yet to be thought and posted the way of the OED. Fronted by a diminutive female vocalist by the name of Eva, Rolo Tomassi are true charmers off stage and beastly brutes on it; their self-titled EP of 2006 earned itself a 9/10 review on DiS and an album’s expected in 2008.

And topping our trio: Errors. ‘Salut! France’ is glitch-fuelled dance rock for fans of Battles and Q And Not U and… oh look… we’ve gone full circle back to Tired Irie. Nice work, succinct blurb-spew.

Efterklang
‘Him Poe Poe’/‘Cutting Ice To Snow’ (Hulk remix)

Ranking highly in DiS’s best albums of 2007 list, Danish collective Efterklang’s second album Parades is the sort of modern classic that only considered listens and time committed can unravel. It’s an album brimming with invention, with an electronic soul set against a heart of darkest blood, rich and warm. Nods to Björk and Sigur Rós afford newcomers a degree of accessibility, while fans of their debut, Tripper, will find similar rewards are to be had with this follow-up given sufficient attention.

Here, we’ve one track from Parades and a special remix of the album’s closer. ‘Him Poe Poe’ will give the uninitiated an insight into Efterklang’s sublime crafting of affecting wall-of-sound arrangements, while the understated re-working of ‘Cutting Ice To Snow’ by Hulk sees the album’s most traditional-sounding number stripped of its jaunty acoustic strum and moulded into a piano-led delight.

Laura Marling
Exclusive video of ‘Ghosts’

It’s probably borderline insulting to constantly obsess on her age, but Laura Marling is rare for 17. Subtle and restrained, hers is a sound as slight as her waif-waist, and hands dangle awkward by her side ‘til they fill with guitar neck.

‘Ghosts’, the first single to be taken from Marling’s forthcoming debut album Alas I Cannot Swim, is a gentle paddle through minor chords as the tale of first love tumbles familiarly into first loss and talk of “ghosts that broke my heart”; subject matter so done it’s a wonder just to hear it not sound trite and obvious.

That it can go on to thrill and enchant as much as it does is almost too much, then, for young hearts to handle.
