Babyshambles: Afrobeat
TheBoyDeadly by TheBoyDeadly May 14th, 2008

Babyshambles drummer Adam Ficek has told the Daily Star that his band’s new record will ditch pop nonsense for tribal beats and adventurous experimentation.

The 29-year-old was talking to the rag after singer Pete Doherty’s release from prison a few days ago.

“It’s a really interesting time for us,” he said. “Myself, Pete, and Mick [Whitnall, guitarist] are all working on solo stuff as well as the band, plus I’m DJing at lots of festivals this summer, so it’s a real melting pot of ideas. The new tunes are sounding a lot less obvious. We don’t have to throw in the big single any more.

“There are longer songs on there that are more about the musical arrangement, plus there’s a pumping tribal thing going on – which is great for the others, but not so great for me as it wears me out.”

To be fair it doesn’t look like there’s any direct mention of Africa in this story, so we’ll have to agree that, either: a) Ficek talked about “African tribal beats” in a part of the conversation that wasn’t reported by Daily Star journalist Kim Dawson; or b) Daily Star journalist Kim Dawson has heard the word “tribal” and arrived at ‘Africa’ and in the process exposed herself, her sub-editor and her paper for the Orientalist small-brains they are.

Probably a), then.
