Sum 41 turn pain into pleasure
tappleby by Tessa Appleby August 2nd, 2002
Canadian punksters Sum 41, have announced details of their forthcoming new album and the planned release from the Group's alter ego band Pain for Pleasure.

In addition to recording the follow-up to last year's hit album 'All Killer No Filler', Sum 41 are creating an EP by their alter ego band, Pain for Pleasure. Both recordings have no confirmed release date, but it is rumoured that both will be released in late November.

'Pain for Pleasure' made their first appearance as a band in the Sum 41 video for the song 'Fat Lip'. But now the evil doppelgängers of the Canadian punksters are not content with a cameo appearance and are out to prove that they are just as good as, if not better than, Sum 41, even if both groups have more than a few things in common!

"A lot of the things that people don't understand is that Pain for Pleasure and Sum 41 are two different groups," explained Sum 41 singer Deryck Whibley. "And they hate each other."

"And it's so funny because they consist of the same members," drummer Steve Jocz added with a chuckle.

Jocz doubles as Pain, the lyricist and lead singer for the side project, and guitarist Dave Baksh is Pleasure, the composer of the music. Whibley and bassist Cone McCaslin are self-defined "hired guns."

As regards to the new Sum 41 album, the band have revealed that their fans can expect the new album to be heavier:
"On the last album, the only metal thing we did was 'Pain for Pleasure,'" Jocz said. "On this one, we want to incorporate more metal into the whole thing."

"It's a bit harder of a sound, I guess," added Whibley. "It still sounds like Sum 41, but a little bit harder, [with] better songs. In the past few years, we've grown a bit."

This change in direction can clearly be seen in the working titles of some of the new tracks for example 'Hell Song', 'Hooch', 'Loser', 'B---hole' and 'A--hole'.
