Violet Violet

Bitchbox

Label: NR One Release Date: 09/07/2007

Norwich trio Violet Violet probably have more reasons than most to be angry, being stuck away in fenland with little more than turkey farms and TK Maxx to keep them occupied.

Not averse to making the sort of racket Courtney Love dished out so vivaciously before real-life soap operas took over, or even the primal gutscraping of people like Huggy Bear and Nation Of Ulysses, Violet Violet are a refreshing (if that were possible) kick in the goolies to boring ladrock and post-rocking chinstrokers the land over.

While the most recurring subject matter seems to be about (ex-)boyfriends, there's a vitriolic undercurrent throughout Bitchbox that sets it apart from its peers.

'26p (virginity)' for example, with its cutting riposte of "...Got no needles in my palm for you to stick them in your arm", is a damning indictment of an old flame who'd do anything for money to buy drugs. Likewise, 'Fucking Kidding Me' is the perfect response to all of the band's haters, a cutting diatribe that makes the mockneyisms of people like Kate Nash and Remi Nicole sound like auditionees for 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?'.

Sure, some people will claim that this kind of thing has been done before, but hey, being pissed off with your lot is as relevant today as it ever was, and Violet Violet sure have a helluva lot of anger to release.
