Truth be told, I’ve next to no idea how to categorise Puerto Muerto in such a way that any critical take on their music is easily digestible for passing eyes, scanning these pages while on a lunch break. No real frame of accurate reference. It’s not your regular rock ‘n’ roll, that’s for sure, but rollicks like the best said field has offered forth these past 50 years. It’s got a twang, a tonk, something leftfield yet immediate; it’s country with a soul left out in the sun too long.

‘What Have I Done’, which comes on tasty blood-red vinyl, is a picked and plucked, stompin’ and scootin’ number comparable with (one hook to hang them on, then) Dan Sartain’s dusty-booted swagger rawk. Y’know: sounds older than its years, crafted with care to sound properly ramshackle. Husband and wife duo Crista Meyer and Tim Kelley know what suits, and they wear their influences well. Many and almost probably all deceased.
