Big Bag

Label: Macdonalds Release Date: 31/08/2001

athomas by Andy (quirk) Thomas August 13th, 2001

If you aren’t a regular record buyer then it is highly likely your brush with pop will come courtesy of the scary clown’s burger bar. An inspired move some think, stick a music sampler cd in with your burger and you might just consume, enjoy, and seek out more manufactured pop (who’s seeing the somewhat unsubtle comparison here…).

First thing to highlight is that the TV advert lies. "Big bands, like Bardot…", erm, hang on, last time I checked Bardot shot into the chart at 41. Anyway, there is one genuine "big band" here, Sugababes. Thankfully the "exclusive" remix of "One Touch" is mercifully unchanged from the original, a classy r&b tinged ballad from the UK’s favourite 30 year old teenagers. The interactive portion of the cd features a long, visually high quality, interview with the girls, which makes this cd a must for fans regardless of the slop on music tracks 2-4.

And what slop it is. Bardot rip off the "Baby One More Time" piano riff within the first 3 seconds of "I Should’ve Never Let You Go". The rest is mid tempo cooing with instruments that sound like they came from a £20 keyboard (in a bad way). Never send an Australian to do an American’s job… Plus points for the inclusion of the full length promo video though, nice bit of manga style cartoon never goes amiss. Debelah Morgan is instantly forgettable on track 3 whilst Harry (???!!!!) does an r&b ballad so utterly bland, inoffensive, and grotesque that it makes Damage seem like Eminem. I’ll put money on the kids not being sucked in by this guy whilst Craig David is around doing it about ten times better.

So that’s your "big" cd (4 tracks) of "big" bands (2 out of 4 having made the top 40). Add points for the interactive element and quality videos. Minus points for it refusing to run on a Mac (I had to use my PC emulator to transfer the video files over to run at full speed).

Ultimately It’ll sell more burgers, but as for more albums and singles I doubt it.
