Fony

Routine Irregular

Label: Casket Music

DiSvsMatt by Mat Hocking July 3rd, 2002

What’s the first thing you think of when I say emotional UK metal? I’m guessing probably one or two of the hoards of unsigned bands trying, but failing oh so terribly, to emulate their arena rock US counterparts by taking the most heart-wrenchingly emotional melodies and backing it up with that stop-start down-tuned distortion, so that by the end of the track they’re almost in tears, screaming out their pain while writhing on the pub floor.

And you feel sorry for them don’t you? I mean, to be in that much distress venting out their frustrations there must be something seriously wrong in their life. Fony, as it happens, epitomise these acts really well, which is a shame because they seem to be quite competent musicians, slurring off all manner of tightly played (nu) metalisms. But the main problem here is they just seem to be slightly confused which style they want to be. I mean, there are elements of *Tool *in some tracks, maybe a bit of *Creed *here, some *Deftones *there. The track ‘R.I.U.P.’ _tickled me a bit when Fony’s vocalist began unravelling a twisted gnarling vocal attack not unlike **Glassjaw **in the song _‘Siberian Hush’. And when you can name particular songs like that it’s not looking good.

If Fony took a step back, looked at their different styles and picked one that doesn’t replicate their CD collection, then we’d be getting somewhere. Until then someone should inform them of the importance of originality in making music.
