Monster Movie

Last night something happened

Label: Clairecords Release Date: 12/02/2002

2211
lcameron by Liane Cameron August 26th, 2002

The brilliantly named Monster Movie's Last night something happened reminds me of this Canadian film I saw when I was a kid. Something about this little boy and his supersmart dog in a tree-filled autumn village.

Anyway, this could have been the soundtrack. A playful, earthy, slightly blurry sound (as if coming from underneath a stream, and no, that isn't my speakers!) that plays along shyly, twists through the air and vocals that sparkle like liquid amber. The Monster Movie sound calmly walks beside you, it doesn't jump out and take over your mood, it's much more subtle than that. If you want to get inside, you have to knock politely, take off your shoes and open the door yourself.

Once in there, you will find a pretty woodpearl string of songs, as if the noise of cars and food blenders and radiowave distortion was dripped liberally all over a strange vinyl concoction, a split double A-side with a alternative rock soul on one, and a gentle requiem for a stormcloud on the other.

Apart from a film score, this would go really well with a long car journey, or just whereever it can nestle happily into the background and work its little magics from there.

It won't burst onto the dancefloor and get its tits out.

But it will charm you like a stray cat that follows you home for a saucer of milk, and the next minute lives in your house and your heart as if it always had been there.

Yeah. It's a little bit like that.
