They Came From The Stars I Saw Them

What Are We Doing Here?

Label: Lo Recordings Release Date: 21/05/2003

Far different to the jovial and festive frolic that was the “You Can’t Fool Us” EP Christmas time release, though equally delicious.

Definitely in touch with the sensibilities in music required to create dark and moody blues melodies, the LP fuses together the organic rhythms that come from a good human drummer, with cheeky eighties synth, smoothly spoken word and a whole plethora of extra musical layers to create an incredibly satisfying and rich psychelly-pop sound.

The best point to the record is that it borrows from the darker and deeper acid blues points often found in moody jazz records, and then fuses them together with cheerful (but thankfully not horribly cheesy) pop sounds. The result is a great record for sitting at home and listening to, y’know, reading a book or whatever, but also a collection of music that must make for an incredible live performance. They have already performed as a “20-piece snowflake orchestra replete with bobble-hatted carol singers and a full horn section”, the connotations of which should give a good insight to what they sound like. A huge group of people, surreal smiles painted on their faces-like they were hanging out with Lethe or something, performing in the same way Pinocchio would after sniffing too much wood glue.

A record that really should be checked out, if not for its astral beauty, then just to hear a really great collective performance piece by some guys from the UK.
