Feverdream

Future Directions

Label: Coalition Records Release Date: 06/10/2003

Mike_Diver by Mike Diver October 6th, 2003

With tours alongside respected indie rock outfits Les Savy Fav and Blonde Redhead in their native Holland under their belt, it’s hardly surprising when Feverdream's opening slavo here, '60 Seconds', comes across like something akin to The Van Pelt, or even Blonde Redhead themselves, i.e. a very respectable indie rock outfit. You could go as far as saying hardcore, what with the occasional screaming and jagged guitars, but not in the sense traditionally associated with the backstreets of Amsterdam.

If ‘Future Directions’, the first thing I’ve personally heard by this three-piece (one girl, two guys), is a decent representation of the band at their peak, then they specialise in teasing the listener; building and building songs like ‘What Pedro Says’ and ‘The Story Of Joanna’, but never letting them reach their expected peaks. As a way of drawing the listener in to the album, and appreciating it as a single coherent work rather than an assortment of individual offerings, this technique works superbly – by the time the almost snarling ‘The Project Of ‘78’ rolls around, just after halfway through, you’re likely to be sucked well and truly in - hook, line and sinker. The lyrics are never rushed, and whilst they’re hardly the work of a poetic genius, expected perhaps from a band singing in a second language, lines like “You can say all you like, but I still know what you look like when you’re naked” (from ‘Shut Your Mouth And Try Again’) are delivered with such honesty that it’s hard not to read them as completely biographical throughout. The end result? An inspirational introduction to a band that I will be listening to a lot more in the future.
