Glasseater

Everything Is Beautiful When You Don't Look Down

Label: Victory Records Release Date: 06/10/2003

4942
DiSvsMatt by Mat Hocking September 29th, 2003

Formerly the leading light on California’s Fearless Records (previously home to At The Drive-In) Glasseater have made the transition to the towering *Victory Records *and recorded an album that should see them make a similar transition to the upper echelons of the =emo= punk stratosphere; that’s if their fourth album is anything to go by. Because, for an example of epic, emotion-ravaging rock with the kind of huge sing-a-long melodies that define some of life’s most fundamental struggles, ‘Everything Is Beautiful…’ is probably the cream of the proverbial crop right now.

Although originating from Miami Glasseater *(named after an episode of the Simpsons where Marge picks up and reads a magazine of the same name) contain members with such diverse ethnicities as Columbian, Cuban, Mexican, Chinese, German and American, which may go some way in explaining the diversity of their music, taking in an invigorating mix of dark, aggressive melodies and wretching *Glassjaw-like drive.

It’s a combination that Glasseater are only too proficient in, the album’s title track emitting a stadium stomping chorus that must surely signal big things for these guys. Although the strength of their tunes does, admittedly, begin to wane slightly towards the end of the album, this is still a beautifully iridescent album, capable of evoking conflicting feelings through a juxtaposition of melody and aggression that creates the kind of fresh, earnest hooks that weld themselves to your senses. And this I like a lot.
