Warped Tour 2004

Label: Side One Dummy Release Date: 21/06/2004

Mike_Diver by Mike Diver June 15th, 2004

The USA's finest (i.e. pretty much only) travelling punk rock-cum-skate festival, The Warped Tour, celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. That's ten years of vert ramps and broken knees, pop-punk and baggy shorts. Oh, and ten years of Pennywise. Great.

This accompanying compilation contains a whopping 50 tracks - some rare, some easily available elsewhere album cuts - so there's bound to be some floating turds on the sea of punk upstarts. 50 is too many, simple as: quantity never equals quality. Nobody really needs the likes of Simple Plan, Maxeen *and *Yellowcard in their lives, each act as insipid and weak as the next, and as for Good Charlotte, well, need I say anything that's not already been said? Had such lightweights (alongside a good dozen others) been trimmed from this release it would have earned at least another star/whatever. Ah well...

...But it's not all doom and overly-familiar gloom; there's quality in here if you're prepared to search for it. Thursday, not usually a band I'd praise, weigh in with a stirring contribution, 'Tomorrow I'll Be You', which has me wondering if I've judged them unfairly. All-girl outfit Go Betty Go's 'C'mon' is a tuneful blast of perfect summertime pop-punk, and great tracks by Coheed and Cambria, Fear Before The March Of Flames (by far the heaviest band here) and Piebald add worth to this, admittedly budget, release. It's just a shame Side One Dummy felt they had to supplement the superb with some spectacularly shit filler.
