Nancy's Dead

Personal Defects

Label:

ransell by Rachelle Ansell August 2nd, 2001

Nancy’s Dead come from Braintree, they formed in 1998, split up after a rehearsal, reformed, and have spent the rest of their time dying their hair in a variety of different colours. Oh and supporting Queen Adreena and Spunge among others. Oh and organising a summer tour.

Pretty impressive then. Now onto the music, Personal Defects is a collection of pretty predictable, but also pretty good punk songs. Opening song Fall Asleep wanders off into Blink 182 pop-punk land. For men who come from Braintree it’s quite funny how Nik The Singer’s voice goes from deepest darkest Essex to deepest darkest America. Aaaanyways there is much shouty snarling, and much gratuitous riffing that would make The Dammed proud.

Again and Again seems to have nicked it’s riff from Much Against Everyone’s Advice by Soulwax…..or maybe Soulwax nicked their dodo-dedodo-dedodo riff off of Nancy’s Dead. The song then explodes into a shouty harmonied punk pop ditty.

Not My Day is a snarled rant at being unlucky……look if this review is starting to look a bit samey it is perhaps because the songs are all pretty similar but come in different speeds. It would be nice to have something a little more er creative than a change of tempo but then that’s possibly not what Nancy’s Dead are here for.

Not bad for its type but unlikely to make me wanna reach for the hair-dye just yet.
