The Boxer Rebellion

EP

Label: Release Date: 10/04/2003

3814
sean by Sean Adams April 14th, 2003

The Verve. Muse. The Cooper Temple Clause. The Music. Maybe even tear splashes from JJ72-ripping-off-the-Pumpkins!

That's that bit outta the way for all your lazy people who just want comparisons to bands you already know and love/hate.

Now what DOES this EP I keep playing actually sound like?

Kicking the doors open in a slurry of disco beats, nightmare-guitars, synth clouds of fuzz and The Music-style mantra of "Inside, Outside, Inside, Outside your love" is 'Watermelon'. And fuck me, I'm dancing like Bez and I DON'T DANCE! There's all sorts going on beneath the stolen tribal-drum beat, machines dying, voices talking on 10 answer phones. All sorts.

Then it goes all a bit ethereal and chilled out on my favourite track on here 'In Pursuit'. Drums that hop. Vocals that sound dazed and sweaty. The other 3 tracks (plus a hidden one) all drift, punch and crazy-dance around cauldrons in the middle of nowhere, in a thunderstorm, with a volcano going off in the background. And mutant children run around excitedly in hippie clothes, throwing their hands in the air and shaking their heads like they just don’t care. You feeling the vibe here yet?

And yeah, it does sound like The Coopers but with more (dare I utter it!) songs, sleepy melodies and belted out escapist lyrics. I really think our world could do with having another post-modern Dance'n'Rock mongrel in our calous-covered mitts! Enter, The Boxer Rebellion...
