Johnny Mental

Demo

Label:

-Raz- by Raziq Rauf April 30th, 2003

These guys come recommended by Hondo Maclean. Who were, in turn, recommended by Funeral for a Friend. Welsh incest strikes again. But is it just love for those close to you taken a step to far, peering through rose-tinted sunglasses, or is this a genuine tip toward another great thing?

Hmmm. It’s metal as fuck [in the context of "FUCKING METAL!!"]. That’s for certain. Four tracks of highly accessible thrash metal - it's got the heavy, heavy, twinkly riffs with thundering, plundering drummering and the screaming then supramelodic singing. It’s not neurosurgery but it’s sure as hell gonna get the pit moving around. This is a band who know how to write good songs and write them effectively. It’s not as easy as it sounds. Formulaic is a word that springs to mind but I deem that far too derogatory – almost as if writing a good song was a bad thing. They do indeed sound like Deftones and Stampin’ Ground with a spraying of the mighty Faith No More. Bloody hell, there’s something nuts going on down in South Wales. They’re all coming out of the woodwork with some degree of class.

Apparently, this is all an accident. Johnny Mental were never meant to be. It was all one big joke. Bet they’re laughing now. Have a cake for this one.
