Shuriken

Surrender Is Not An Option

Label:

_kp_ by Kate Price July 13th, 2003

Emo! It’s flavour of the moment and utterly inescapable. They’ll batter you with their skateboards if you label them like this but one thing’s for sure; those kids with the black rimmed glasses and asymmetric lip-piercings sure are onto a winner! And with a suitably emo title to their undeniably emo new EP, ‘Surrender Is Not An Option’, Scunthorpe post-punkers, Shuriken are here to shake the scene and give the big-wigs a run for their money.

First thoughts? Saves The Day. This Girl fronted by some guy with a high-pitched bratty voice or Funeral For A Friend gone pop. You know basically what you’re getting and you also know that you’re either an emo kid through-and-through or you’re sick of the whiney bastards and wish they’d all die.

Meanwhile, I’m still clinging firmly to the fence, singing along to five energetic, irresistible tunes and a funked up, low-fat version of grease-meister Ricky Martins’ hit, ‘Vida Loca’. I’m feeling almost certain that I’ve heard the entirety of this CD from various sources before, but then, I’m not especially caring – just ‘cause it’s good!
