Ultraviolet Pilots

Ultraviolet Pilots

Label: Release Date: 08/03/2004

afuture1 by Andrew Future March 9th, 2004

London trio Ultraviolet Pilots have a vision. Everyone talks in American accents, tries to paper over the influence of Oasis and Radiohead and swing their baseball bats at the stars like they’re Richie Sambora in Bon Jovi’s heyday. It’s with little surprise then, that this here demo takes the raggedy likes of Feeder and pishes all over their Smahsing Pumkins-lite pop-rock from a great height.

Don’t believe all these boys tell you though. They’re neither the Chilis nor The Stone Temple Pilots. But as far as this meticulously produced EP goes to show, from the summery, West Coast acoustics of ‘Take What You Can Get’ to the funked up wall of sound that is ‘Smashing Song’, Ultravilot Pilots definitely look out of the sunny side of Kennington.

Sounding occasionally like a cleaner, less cancer-throated Kelly Jones, singer/songwriter/producer Mark Wilkins’ vocals have a warmth beauty, especially on the stadium swelling opener ‘Phone Call’ which sounds like the sheen of Oasis, and the pop spite of Nirvana arranged by The Bends-era Radiohead. But there’s more of an urgency to it than that. It’s bigger than the kind of universal pop farted down our airwaves by countless inferior American bands. With some time, more tunes and a bit of luck, UVP could be flying the flag themselves soon. Watch the fuckers fly.
