AKA

Make it nice/ Summers comin

Label: Things To Come Release Date: 28/08/2000

vbird by Vic Bird August 28th, 2000

Double A-side from the London Six-piece genre breakers.

So, are AKA an Indie, Hip-hop, Funk, Dance or Punk-rock band? The answer is none of these yet all of them. They play with a unique style, blending, crossing and breaking all the rules of most musical genres. In truth they do what they like and it sounds great…

This their third single is more upbeat in tempo than previous number ‘You’ve been sold’. With ‘Make it nice’ being built around a pumping bass line and a chorus of ‘I’m gonna’ and ‘Summers comin’ fronting a Latino style rhythm, this double a-side is pure uplift and oozes so much sunshine it brightens even the dullest of days. The only let-down for me would have to be the b-side ‘50’ A 7 minuter that sounds as if it could be straight from the Lo-fi All-stars with its opening gothic background and prayer to God turning into just another monotonous dance track. Somehow it just doesn’t hit the mark.

If boy bands had wit, talent and style the result may not be too far removed from this quirky little number. It’s not an angst-ridden thought-provoker, it doesn’t claim to be. Maybe it’s the tongue-in-cheek, slap in the face style that makes this record stand out from the current scene. Just slap this record on and enjoy.

Expect more to come from these guys with the release of their debut album ‘Pigeonomics’ (November date), y’know they’re gonna make it nice, and about fucking time!
