It’s nice to see that despite the huge infesting interest for Nu-Metal of late, some labels are still prepared to introduce bands bearing a little more towards the indie-rock side of things. ‘27’ is Biffy Clyro’s debut E.P. for Beggars Banquet who describe them as an “aggressive popcore outfit” from Glasgow.
Aggressive is really too harsh a word to describe Biffy Clyro though, who for me remain powerfully reflective at all times. Prevailing verses lift you with thoughtful lyrics and delicious melodies before soaring choruses engulf you with sparkling distortion and commanding vocal harmonies. Biffy Clyro have the same effect on you as watching glowing Christmas lights flash brightly on and off whilst alone in a quiet room late at night. They are magic and absorb you into them so that they become the most important thing in the world, everything else seems vacant in comparison.
‘27’ hits you with its intense emotions and makes you love Biffy Clyro from the start. Other tracks on the E.P. continue to provoke and mesmerise, especially ‘Instructio4’, which evokes memories of every bad thing that has ever happened to you with its inherent sadness before pulling out the plug and letting all your unhappiness fade away into the music.
