King Of Woolworths

Bakerloo

Label: Mantra Release Date: 20/08/2001

matt by Matthew Willson August 1st, 2001

Originally on a hard-to-find 10", it's about time this excellent track got a proper airing. For those who remember his last release (the deeply claustrophobic electro scare tactics of 'Stalker song'), this track makes considerably more pleasant listening. That isn't to say it's not just as compelling though - a slow laid-back beat builds up around a gorgeous echoing ambience spelt out by chiming xylophones, pulsing samples, and a steady bassline.

The remixes are equally good - first up label-mates Saint Etienne transform the song into a more lively melodic affair with energetic shuffling beats, washed-out patches with flutes and echoes, and bursts of New order style chords, keyboard and pulsing basslines. Liverpool moog-freaks Ladytron manage to turn the track into an Add N to X style fast-paced robot dance affair, driven by pulsing keyboard squelches and a tight drum loop.

A great single then, and hopefully leading up to a full album release some time soon. Anyone in need of a whistful leftfield chill-out soundtrack for what's left of the summer should buy this now.
