Ladytron

Playgirl

Label: Invicta Hi-Fi Release Date: 19/11/2001

924
n_jones by Neil Jones November 23rd, 2001

You can only get away with walking the gravel-gilded streets of Liverpool dressed in the tradition of four Milk Tray men if you’re as cool as Ladytron are.

Emerging out of Hong Kong, Bulgaria, Scotland, and the Wirral; honing their sound in Japan and Scandinavia and known to take inspiration from Soviet Bloc Architecture and own Ph.Ds in genetics, they're not as aesthetically elitist as you might think... they're more so. But that’s a good thing.

‘Playgirl’ is the fifth single to come off their sparkling debut album like an icicle off an ornate igloo, and is worth its re-release a hundred times over. A hymn to small town claustrophobia and dissolute femininity in a style of knowing poetic allure, it retains all the night time aura of dance music and resurrects a human sentiment that warms the cockles of the heart of the true dissenter.

A warm glow in a beguilingly cold climate, Ladytron continue on their musically thrilling journey through isolationist heaven.
