The Volts

Looking For A Way Out EP

Label: Sweet Records

_kp_ by Kate Price May 9th, 2002

“BOM BOM DE BOM-BOM. BOM BOM DE BOM-BOM-BOM” quoth I the rhythmic, pounding wonder that is_ one of the six quite remarkable bass lines of The Volt’s debut EP. Indeed, if there was one thing to credit this band on, it is most obviously their bass player. These five young men boast what so many acts doing the toilet circuits of late lack; the ability to not only play their instruments _well, but to use them in a sensitive, harmonious kinda way. Y’know, rather than just bashing out the notes, void of soul, emotion or any measure of depth.

Now before you start getting the wrong impression here, The Volts ain’t no cheesy ballad-rawk band. ‘Looking For Away Out’ is a surprisingly successful blend of everything tuneful and melodic the band love. Without having to know much about the members themselves, it’s pretty easy to tell that influences come from the likes of Oasis, Idlewild and the White Stripes – it’s all thrown in there, mixed around, spiced up and regurgitated in the form of six mind-spanking pop-rock eruptions. Duller, more plodding moments of 'Your Song' are out-weighed by the luscious little indie chirrupings of ‘Expose Your Cheapness’ and the groove-worthy twists of ‘Somewhere’ and final track ‘It’s All Ok’.

‘Looking For Away Out’ ain’t no musical revolution and with musicians as evidently accomplished and talented as this, you have to wonder why they don’t try experimenting with their own sound a little more. But… overall, I like it... I like it very much indeed!
