Boniface

Cheeky

Label: Sony Release Date: 05/08/2002

rluckett by Robert Luckett August 1st, 2002

Girls will scream at Boniface. Coolly sliding across stage, singing songs people fuck to, looking like Usher, sounding like an "Off The Wall" Michael Jackson, you've seen him, you’ve heard him, you've endured it all before. But Boniface is different.

He's not different because he was a child star in the Caribbean, and released an album at the age of three. He's not different because he produces all his own stuff. He's not different because he writes his own songs (how dreadfully authentic. Actually, why do people see this as a good thing?? A shit song is a shit song, just because it's written by someone famous does not make it any less shit. But I digress). He's different because he makes fucking incredible pop music.

"Cheeky", his effervescent debut, is the most arresting pop/r'n'b single since "Try Again" hastily stamped it’s way into our lives in 2000. It cuts through all the heavily marketed bilge of most British urban music, and stands alone as a wonderful example of fantastic soul boy vocals and a production so harsh, so real that it seems assault all your senses to grab and dominate your attention. Of course, it's a song about how sexy Boniface is, and how lucky you'd be to have your wicked way with him. But the lyrics - as with all great pop songs - are incidental.

This is a perfectly executed, UK Garage-tinged piece of British pop/r'n'b. Ignore it at your peril.
