The Mau-Maus

Antaraxia EP

Label: Boobytrap Release Date: 30/05/2005

8555
sparkle by Rosanna Alam June 1st, 2005

The Mau-Maus are a six piece from London who have a penchant for kitsch Pringles golfing attire and camp, electro, hip hop, alt–rock. In addition front man Peter De Havilland is quite partial to a poodle hairdo and seventies retro suits. Right now, you maybe thinking something along the lines of: “just wait a goddam FischerspoonerDoMeBadthingsScissorSisters minute, these retro fashonistas maybe able to walk the walk but can they talk the talk?”

The answer is – yes they can. With chic R‘n’B vocals and funk-ridden pop, there is something distinctively catchy about this. Highlights present themselves in the accordion based 'Royal Ghetto' with its distant falsetto cry, while the odd 'Antarxia' has the same appeal as The Ones', 'Flawless'. It’s flamboyant, cheeky and not to be taken seriously - ideal fun for all the sunnier days and disco nights soon to be on the horizon.
