The Raveonettes

LA Girls

Label: Crunchy Tunes Release Date: 01/03/2009

3571
-gen- by Gen Williams March 20th, 2003

On the one hand, The Raveonettes sound really good - it's the whole Mary Chain Buddy Holly Ramones mashup thing. It's great. They also look cool. Marvellous. Sorted.

On the other hand, and this is a problem, they are perilously close to becoming a novelty band and sinking without trace a year from now. The problem is, all their songs sound exactly the same. Not quite a lot like each other - EXACTLY the same. Same tune, repeatedly. It's that whole "recorded in glorious B flat minor" thang they got going on. It's a problem. 'LA Girls' sounds exactly like 'Beat City' sounds exactly like 'Attack Of The Ghost Riders' sounds exactly like anything else of theirs you care to name.

For the time being though, it sounds really really good. And you should grab this release for the b-side alone. Remarkably, 'Wanna Dance' sounds exactly like every other song they have - but it has a fantastic buzzing, fuzzy little fucker of a riff, and the lines "wanna dance with rock n roll / c'mon kiss my dirty soul", uttered with delicious, throwaway nonchalance. This alone makes it worth your time and attention. Go on. They won't be around forever.

*Please note that this CD is a ltd edition single of which only 666 copies were made. You can get it by hitting their website here.
