The Open

Never Enough

Label: Loog Records Release Date: 17/11/2003

5189
gdobson by Gareth Dobson November 20th, 2003

A word to the wise: In 2004, unless something very remiss happens (singer falls down lift shaft, guitarist forgets to inhale following exhalation) The Open are going to do very, very well.

So, perhaps we should see this not so much as a single review than as a cursory nod of appreciative awareness. 'Never Enough' is the Liverpool-based quintet's first offering to the world, and mixes bombast and melody in equal measures. It's epic rock that reminds of The Verve at their most gregariously pleasing. Second track 'Music' is all swirls and dense Bunnymen atmospherics, and provides a nice counterpart.

It's a very good debut, but one that mainly serves as a marker for future conquests. Keep your ears posted.
