The Shins

Fighting In A Sack

Label: Sub Pop Release Date: 26/07/2004

6410
mannot by Michaela Annot July 26th, 2004

There are times when listening to The Shins is like having your head beaten in by a large sack of sugar, such is the constant, pounding assault of sweetness.

But that's the way that these things work apparently; tunes, I mean. And if so, that makes 'Chutes Too Narrow' (possibly named after the experience of painful 'back door' sex - or is that just my experience?) the most blissful, skull-caving experience possible.

'Fighting In A Sack' (mmm, kinky) is a helter-skelter pelt through a Paul Simon song as recorded by the Misfits, jaggedly smart and catchy. Although not quite in the same league as the likes of 'Kissing The Lipless' or 'So Says I' from the album, this is more than good enough to win new fans and admirers. And I'm pretty sure that's what this whole singles game is about.
