Chapter Of Accidents

Label: Angry Liberal Records Release Date: 08/08/2005

You'll have heard the name bubbling under in the clubs of London Town for a good couple of years, but Corporation:Blend don't fit your average Poptones bill. 'Chapter Of Accidents' is the band's second single, and takes you on a four-song trip through the band's many moods and influences.

The EP's most straightforward track is 'Be The Weapon', a swaggering glam anthem that effectively pours glitter out of the speakers, but for more visceral thrills, you need only start from the beginning. _'Mathematician' is a sinister masterpiece, which sees the band firing on all cylinders; opening with maniacal drumming from Ash Howard, the band effectively invent their own genre (one might call it 'Mexican-Gunfight Punk'), as singer Rob sounds like he's fighting with a thesaurus, and winning. However, the momentum changes, when the track decays into a swaying ballad, before inexplicably stepping back up a gear into the primitive punk of its opening. Schizophrenic ain't the half of it.

And therein lies the problem with the EP: while the first two tracks would have made a fantastic double A-side single, the other two tracks show a more confused side to the band as they attempt to cram as many different ideas into the remaining 13 minutes as they can. The funky 'Too Rich For Water...' features Dexy K's finest bass riff to date, but decides to charge into a prog-punk outro, as Rob seems to have accidentally turned all his effects pedals on at once. Similarly, the intense _'Beyond The Day' drags on slightly during its eight-minute running time, as do some of its sloganeering lyrics, but when it decides to kick in (at seemingly random points during the song), it seems that it could well have been the highlight of the EP.

Anyone who's seen this band in action know what they’re capable of, but this EP doesn't deliver the consistent buzz of their live sets. Corporation:Blend have the potential to be a force to be reckoned with, that much is certain, but according to the Chapter Of Accidents, it's only when they want to be. I guess the only solution would be to read on...
