Nurse

The Society For The Recovery Of Persons Apparently Dead

Label: self-release Release Date: 05/09/2005

9373
Mike_Diver by Mike Diver September 5th, 2005

Neatly packaged and well produced, this four-track EP from Cheltenham-based trio* Nurse* can hardly be called a demo; indeed, many a rock single has passed through DiS's collective earshot and struggled to make half the impression that lead track 'Days Of Incredible Greatness' does. Think Feeder circa Swim with much larger bollocks with just a pinch of Faith No More's slightly skewed take on commercial rock and you're not so far short of the song's immediate sound. As a curtain-raiser it's quite the attention grabber.

The band's self-penned "dodgy press release" _(their words) states that they aim to _"stretch the three-piece band template", and to their credit they at least somewhat succeed: 'Impact Burn' blends deviations into riffing complexity with an underlying straightforward rhythm that'll certainly appeal to those requiring a toe-tapping characteristic, and the closing 'Malv' features some impressively left-of-centre drumming and intelligent bass work. The vocals aren't entirely there yet, but the confidence to leave behind the slightly frustrating American twang will come with time and experience (the band only formed last year).

It's a terrible cliché to finish a piece such as this with a "promising" parting shot, but for once the sentiment is absolutely genuine. Keep an eye out for these guys when they're on their travels, as all the clues point toward them tearing up a stage with ease.
