My Awesome Compilation

Awake

Label: Sore Point Records Release Date: 07/08/2006

14748
Renald by Lauren Starkey August 7th, 2006

When did it become okay for pop music to be so bland? When I see that something's labeled 'infectious pop' and 'the perfect example of what sunshine influence anthems are all about', I want to hear McFly's 'That Girl', The Wannadies' 'You and Me Song', or even Lily Allen's 'Smile'. What I don't want is this substandard drivel.

'Awake' sounds like the same song that's been released, claiming to be a summer anthem, a hundred times before; like most of those already-issued efforts, it'll end up languishing in the bottom end of the top 40 at best. A summer anthem should be the kind of song that sticks in your head for days afterwards, something that makes you want to jump about in the sunshine, something that you can imagine yourself dancing like a lunatic to at any summer festival. It shouldn't make you want to turn it off within seconds and pray for the return of Dodgy.

My Awesome Compilation are possibly one of the least original or imaginative bands to ever try and pass themselves off as infectious, be they pop or not, and 'Awake' seems the perfect example of what sunshine-influenced anthems aren't about. MAC are a bland, second-rate Busted. Steer well clear.
