Courtney Love wishes Frances Bean a happy birthday on Twitter

News by Luke Slater

Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain turned 18 a couple of days ago. Her mother, who 'maintains' a Twitter account, had this to say to her. It stops being funny after about the second tweet, but still, slightly perplexing (via Buzzfeed).»

DiS meets Hjaltalín

In Depth by Luke Slater

The week or so prior to depature I'd been aware of Reykjavik seven-piece Hjaltalin and their debut record, Sleepdrunk Seasons. Aware that it was as promising as it was engaging and full of both those things. Their second record, Terminal, I was less familiar with. That's to say it was completely alien – I hadn't heard a note of it. Rare are the times that listening to a record is a process of discovery, and one not just of the artist but of their nature and...well...the record in its entirety. »

Friday Fun: Cats In Paris sing the news

News by Luke Slater

We've known about Cats In Paris's project to write a new song for every day in August - based on the news of that day - for a week or two now, but only now has the time come where it's suitable to write something about it. Partly due to time constraints and partly due to it being a Friday. Friday Fun and all. »

Watch: Masks live at The Great Escape 2010

News by Luke Slater

A couple of months ago, DiS packed up its bags and went to Brighton for The Great Escape. We even hosted a stage there. In what is a gay club. The Ruby Suns played a seven-minute set and Japandroids did their best to tear up whatever was in their way during a set which wasn't quite that short, but curt nonetheless.»

Watch: Yeasayer - 'Madder Red'

News by Luke Slater

So far so good with Yeasayer videos. They certainly know how to do the strange, and how to do it very well. Whether it's the drenched-in-chicken-korma figures from 'Ambling Alp' or some other such nakedness, their videos are always worth a watch. Can't see this changing any time soon, in truth.»

Best Coast, Sky Larkin at Cargo, London, Mon 02 Aug

Review by Luke Slater

Sometimes there is nothing more repelling than hype. Not because people aren't to be trusted, especially when it often appears to be a gigantic weight of them, but more because the crushing of heightened expectation is never fun and you'll never regain the enthusiasm that was once a product of the small element of mystery. It's more than fair to say that Best Coast have been recipients of an awful lot of talk, chatter, much positive, much of it perhaps over the top. Maybe it's because there's so little to get excited about nowadays. I don't really know. »

Watch: TEETH - 'See Spaces'
