This Week's Singles: 23/05/11 Battles, Toddla T, Herman Dune, Bibio, Villagers

In Depth by Wendy Roby

This week I asked my Mum if she would like to contribute to my column. Her marks are in brackets. We do not agree on Single of the Week. »

This Week's Singles: 16/05/11 Lykke Li, Ghostpoet, Justice, Those Dancing Days

In Depth by Wendy Roby

Although it is parlous to make comparisons between olden day sounds and modern nonsense, this week I have struggled. This is partly due to my having moved The Elizabethan (my favourite, favourite record player) into my bedroom; and it is partly because once moved, I started playing things like Hall & Oates, The Peddlers and Sunflower by the Beach Boys on it. And while I listened I had a nice cup of coffee from the Teasmade. Faced with such fulsome early morning bliss, not much can compete. But Ghostpoet had a ruddy good try. It's alright though, I still love now. »

This Week's Singles: 09/05/11 Here We Go Magic, Christian AIDS, Austra, Planningtorock

In Depth by Wendy Roby

This week I sat down and listened to the whole of Emerson Lake and Palmer's Tarkus. On purpose. On the basis that nothing else on earth could ever be as dread, JAZZ or ackfing noodly, every song catalogued here deserves to win a really, really good prize. But we only award one - which goes this week goes to Here We Go Magic. They wouldn't make a whole album about an abominational half-armadillo / half-tank creature; they wouldn't call a song 'Bitches Crystal'. STUPID, STUPID, BLOODY PROG.»

This Week's Singles: 2/05/11

In Depth by Wendy Roby

This week we are talking about bands who have a sense of music's inherent ridiculosity, pop from one of The Beautiful People, scary music by Louche Types, washes of noise about life as a vacuum AND a not very convincing three minute manifesto about not really being in love.»

This Week's Singles: 25/04/11

This week the red rosette goes to Purity Ring. But there is also some dramatic hip hop and Art Honking. »

This Week's Singles: 18/04/11

In Depth by Wendy Roby

You would think that after Record Store Day’s bonus release date there would be no singles left in the music cupboard. You would be wrong, because rather like footer, music NEVER ENDS. Dog love it for not.»

Record Store Day: Let's Get Physical

In Depth by Wendy Roby

Because there is nothing quite like getting all expansive and daft about something you love, Wendy Roby has had a bit of a rant about the physical world, and why it is 'quite good'. »

This Week's Singles: 28/03/11

In Depth by Wendy Roby

This week there are not one but TWO singles of the week - I have been sitting on Danielson and Taylor Kirk for heaps and ages waiting to write about them, it can't have been comfortable. In fact, if I am honest, there are THREE singles nestled under my patootie, because the Body Language one is a bit ruddy good as well. All in all, a good week for bands. Rejoice!»

This Week's Singles: 21/03/11

In Depth by Wendy Roby

Because it is finally SPRING, this week I have reinstated the Bike Riding System of Single Appreciation. And despite spending all weekend wanting to listen to this bit of magnificent on repeat, I still found time to extol the joys of Okkervil River, the Phantom Band, Icona Pop, Grinderman and Matt & Kim. It’s all that blood pumping, you see, it makes you think better.»

This week's column includes some TOP LEVEL ADVICE for dealing with yoots on buses. Warning: may not hactually work outside of Norfolk. »

This week's round-up of all things small and darling is about barbershops, razor blades, takeaway heart attacks and having a furious row about the Common Market when you really just want to snog them. »

In Depth by Wendy Roby

DiS was lucky enough to go to by:Larm, Oslo's annual music festival and industry conference. It's basically SXSW except everyone is considerably better looking. Also, cold. »

Single of the Week! Cults - ‘Go Outside’ (In The Name Of / Columbia) Cults will make you listen to their glockenspiel if it kills them but they are nice about it; pinning you down with ribbons rather than nails. And though ‘Go Outside’ is sli»

This Week's Singles: 07/02/11

A warning: this week the number of wicked new sounds is in inverse proportion to the number of mangled analogies used to describe them. All this means is that there is quite a lot to get giddy about.»

This Week's Singles: 31/01/11

In Depth by Wendy Roby

This week's selection really is a bit marvellous, from the giddily incorrigible Physical Forms to the sheer flipping beauty of La Sera. Thanks very much music, you are quite good. »

This Week's Singles: 24/01/11

In Depth by Wendy Roby

This week we are talking about Byker Grove, bricks made of Thinky Stick diseases and how all the younglings are hot for not-caring. I think. »

This Week's Singles: 10/01/11

In Depth by Wendy Roby

In my first column of the year I intend to cheat, gleefully ignoring release dates partly because it is so quiet out and partly because The Shops have been sitting on extra copies of things with their doughy Christmas arses; oh there they are. My thing, my RULES, MAN - which is why we start the year in a gloriously positive fashion. And have TWO winners. Hello! So, you look well. Did you get any nice presents?»

Singles of the Year 2010: Part the Second, A TOP 50!

In Depth by Wendy Roby

And so it ends, off pootles 2010 with all its talk of shackles, wor and love lost. Here, the continuation of this year's Top 100 Singles, with some special mentions for my absolute favourite and best sounds near the bottom. I may actually have chosen 101. Do forgive. »

Singles of the Year 2010: Part the First!

In Depth by Wendy Roby

Singles of the Year 2010: Part the 1st This year I have written approximately 117,600 words about my favourite format, this being at the low end of an estimate that I find frankly terrifying. I have listened to singles on my bike, I have listened to the»

Trans Musicales Day 3: The DiS Review

In Depth by Wendy Roby

The last day of Les Trans will be a day of meetings and re-meetings. But by day three I know how to play this thing. Judiciously timed disco naps, galettes saucisses, coffee and lady smuggling will be key today, all of which will largely explain how I do »

Yore Songs #1: I've Been Waiting by Sara Lowes

In Depth by Wendy Roby

The first in a series of monthly posts that puts singular singles under the spotlight. The only criteria is that it has to be from the olden days of YORE, and the SONG in question has to MEAN SOMETHING TO YOU MAN. »

This week is last of the absurd pre-Christmas log-jams, and I am pleased to tell you there is much to love. Not least Old Blakey (drama), Pulled Apart By Horses (rampage), Tickler Tea & Magic Fuzz (The Funk) and Robyn (love-scarred wisdom I intend to ignore).»

Trans Musicales: The DiS Preview

In Depth by Wendy Roby

Hello Everyone. On the 9th, 10th and 11th days of next month I shall be in France at a thing called Trans Musicales. And I don’t know if you can tell what those crazy French have done there, but they have put the word 'musical' together with the word ‘trans’, to create the word ‘transmusical’. And I don't know what that means, but I am pretty sure it is good. Here's why you should come too...»
