Alamos - Photograph It

Review by ellen_dis

Seafood at Manchester Roadhouse, Mon 11 Oct

Review by ellen_dis

Seafood are a difficult band to get your head round. They’ve been floating around on the scene for years and yet they never seem to go anywhere. Watching them tonight in the sweaty armpit of Manchester that is the Roadhouse, they seem to encapsulate a time from six years ago when there were so many exciting young British bands doing the toilet circuit. It wasn’t a life-changing time, and it’s never going to be heralded as any kind of influential era, but for teenagers going to their first gigs it was something special. Where bands like Cable disappeared off the planet and others like Snow Patrol have rocketed to ridiculous levels, Seafood have just been hanging around on the outskirts, kicking their scruffy Converse-d heels. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. There is something endearing about a band who continue to keep their head above water (just) despite all odds.»

Jocks Rock pt. 2: Belle and Sebastian

In Depth by ellen_dis

They’re the Blazin’ Squad of the twee pop universe – the band who many people would call the quintessential Scottish indie act. In the second part of DiS’ s look at the Scottish music industry we chat to those fey and softly spoken experimentalists Belle and Sebastian.»

Jocks Rock pt. 1: Biffy Clyro

In Depth by ellen_dis

Over the following months I’ll be talking to Scottish bands about what it means to them to come from Scotland and their experiences of the Scottish music industry. First up I spoke to Glasgow-bred Biffy Clyro. They’ve been featured various times on DiS but I wanted to cover them from an angle we’ve not looked at before….»

The Far-ther of Emo?

In Depth by ellen_dis

They were never hugely successful in the UK but Sacramento post-hardcore troubadours Far are seen as underground legends in certain metal circles. Hell is For Heroes and Biffy Clyro cite them as one of their influences and Funeral for a Friend have recorded a version of one of their songs as a b-side for forthcoming single ‘She Drove Me to Daytime Television’. One might say that Far were ahead of their time, their music pre-empting the sounds of the emo bands which flood MTV2 today.»

Hertfordshire hardcore at its finest....

Only two years since their inception and Hertfordshire hardcore boys Aconite Thrill have just signed a deal with Mighty Atom Records, home to acclaimed bands such as Funeral For A Friend and Hondo Maclean. Ash at Manchester Apollo, Thu 08 May

Review by ellen_dis

‘Greatest Hits’ albums. ‘Singles Collections’. Everyone knows that more often than not they signal the start of a downward spiral for your favourite band. Obviously I bought last year’s Intergalactic Sonic 7s, but I filed it away in my CD rack with the rest of my Ash records, breathed a deep sigh and said»

Mercury Tilt Switch, Tribute To Nothing, Har Mar Superstar at Academy (Liverpool University), Liverpool, Mon 03 Mar

Review by ellen_dis

Who the hell is responsible for this crazy combo?

Take a pinch of Midlands screamo-core, a dash of Scottish emo and a generous helping of greasy porn star music and what you have is one of the weirdest line-ups to hit Liverpool in a good while.

Ed Harcourt - From Every Sphere

Review by ellen_dis

He's an odd creature is Ed Harcourt. Seven years ago he was playing bass for indie quirksters Snug and now he re-emerges as a 'serious' songwriter with a Mercury Prize nomination under his belt. But can From Every Sphere live up to the acclaim of his debut?

3 Colours Red at Manchester Academy 3 (formerly Hop & Grape), Wed 13 Nov

Review by ellen_dis

Cast your mind back to 3 Colours Red in 1997. With their black, greasy image and Chris McCormack's crazy rock and roll antics 3CR were always at the more Kerrang!-friendly end of the Britpop scale. Nevertheless they were an integral ingredient in the late 90s British indie scene. Their trademark: three minute si»

The Lollies - Taste

Review by ellen_dis

Helen Love wannabes produce yawnsome debut

Two-thirds Canadian and one-third American, The Lollies formed in 1999 to apparently pay homage to all-girl groups such as Kenickie. And a crap version of Sleater Kinney is the result. Taste leaves you with the realisation that there's only so many t»

Sufferkiss, Sniper Wolf, Facing Home at Northampton Racehorse Inn, Mon 19 Aug

Review by ellen_dis

Northampton is a lot like London in the way it has small pavements and busy roads, not to mention the odd strange looking person wandering around. Since I’m into a variety of sounds these days I was glad at the extremely diverse bill for tonight’s low key show, headlined by local hardcore heroes Facing Home.

Antihero - The Alamo

Review by ellen_dis

It’s been a busy year for Antihero. Since the ‘MTV’ single in 2000, they’ve released the ‘Who’s Looking Out For Number One?’ 7”, received airplay on Radio 1 and the World Service (true!) and done a hell of a lot of live appearances, culminating in this month’s nationwide tour. If you caught them on»

(Review of nothing)

Review by ellen_dis

Not to be confused with metalcore crew Chimaira, indie hopefuls Chimaera have produced a promising and professional release in the form of the We are the Whores EP. It’s a refreshing change from the many mediocre demos which arrive on the drownedinsound desktop, because it refuses to blend in as backgroun»

Guitar rock 'n' roll overdrive with icing on top

In Depth by ellen_dis

The Columbia Hotel, west London – the establishment immortalised in the Oasis song is heaving tonight. Sharing the bar with only three other people, I and Christopher, elfin-featured front man of hotly tipped Californian quintet The Pattern settle down for a quiet pint. Tonight was the London date of the NME Upstart»
