Josephine Foster + Mi And L'au in Manc. - 22 Aug

PAvI [Edit] [Delete] 17:17, 14 August '05
Pop Art vs. Industry presents:

Josephine Foster + Mi and L'au + Nancy Cunliffe
Monday 22nd The Bowling Green, Grafton St, Manchester £5 adv

Opera school dropout Josephine Foster is perhaps best known as ½ of the spare twisted up Appalachian duo, Born Heller. Hailing from Chicago, her beautifully haunting psychedelic folk has been compared to such greats as Shirley Collins and Vashti Bunyan. New record "Hazel Eyes, I Will Lead You" (Locust) is an invitation to get lost in the wide-eyed acreage of song throughout the ages - a bent and intuitive collection of supernatural balladry. Earthen hymns, cosmic madrigals, flapper blues and acid folk are sewn into one luminescent patch from one of America's most adventurous and pioneering songstresses. Self produced in the studio with an array of unusual instruments and eclectic arrangements, "Hazel Eyes..." is a fearless collection of 14 self-penned originals to stir the spirited souls of nymphs and shepherds alike.

Finnish model Mi and French musician Lau met in Paris a few years back. They fell deeply and immediately in love, and shortly gave everything up and decided to move to the woods in Finland, so they could be alone together in peace and to spend their time discovering each other and their music. They live in a small cabin in complete isolation with the barest of essentials and they spend virtually all their time making music together in solitude. Their music is bare and austere, made with simple instrumentation - voice, acoustic guitars, and other very sparse orchestrations. Their music reminds one of how a winter Finnish landscape might be imagined - haunting and pure. Their debut album will be out on Michael Gira's Young God Records in the autumn.
