Play It By Ear Club - 28th Feb

rachiebee [Edit] [Delete] 23:59, 19 February '09

Calling London, Calling Brooklyn, Calling Johannesburg! Calling all you dancers around the world – UNITE!
We’ve seen the future and the only way of making it any fun is through the power of FEET.
So this month we’re gonna kick that recession back to 1989 by welcoming back the very sort of dance-mania that got ravers high and the government in a tizz.

SAT 28th FEB

***PLAYDOE*** (Johannesburg)

“I’ve seen the future of African music and its wearing a baseball cap and calling me ‘homie’” gushed the NME in their review of South African electro-rap duo Playdoe’s debut EP.
Well, we’re inclined to agree. These self-described ‘neo-electro Afrobotic ethnotechno mamas’ boys are rude, crude and just wanna have fun and so they do with a handful of Casio sounds, thumping basslines and gut-wrenching beats.

With drum loops, 80s synth melodies, rappers Sibot and Spoek are like a Dizze Rascal meets Afrika Bambaataa producing a sound they flamboyantly described as “African noise for the ass and the tit”.
There’s a savvy sonic method underpinning a genre pilfering sonic madness that cobbles oh-so-1981 retro-electro, chrome-plated disco funk sampled groove chunks and turntable scratched de-and-re-constructions onto attention deficit disordered throwback raps that channel influences ranging from the pre-thug life party starters of Grandmaster Flash to the psychedelic funk of George Clinton and back.

***TOTALLY ENORMOUS EXTINCT DINOSAURS*** (UK)

This 19-year-old wunderkind hailing from Oxford has been described as the perfect tonic to all the noisy, pretentious Parisian electro. Making playful but driving electro-pop music with a purpose TEED has catchy basslines and euphoric, bouncy, uplifting electronica.
Check out their remix of Jonquil’s Sudden Sun in particular as well as Dinosaurs Having A Party – Totally Brilliant Dancefloor Destroyers!

***CUBIC ZIRCONIA*** (Brooklyn)
