LEEDS: Sic Alps + Spectrals + Rent Boys @ Fenton - Wed 7th Oct

stroid [Edit] [Delete] 21:05, 26 September '09

Summertime Stroids present...

San Francisco's Sic Alps return to Leeds almost exactly a year since their last visit when they played to a packed out Saturday night crowd at the RPC. Since then "A Long Way Around to a Short Cut", a comp of all their out-of-print stuff, has been re-released as a double LP on Drag City and the band have become a trio with Ty Segall joining them on drums - a youngster who has received much acclaim in recent times with his own one man band of that name.

Sic Alps have carved themselves a snug niche filled with fuzz, crackle and vibes - and most of all cracking tunes - making music with their eyes on the past but their feet firmly in the present. Bits of psychedelia, folk, garage, and punk are seamlessly worked together to render easy categorisations pointless.

Sic Alps' new single "L.Mansion" dropped earlier this month on Slumberland, their first new record since 2008's future-classic "U.S. EZ" LP, their second LP proper, out on Siltbreeze. A split is also due with upcoming West Coast touring partners Magik Markers, as is another West Coast tour with Sonic Youth early in the new year.

The band have consistently been releasing solid records since 2004 on Woodsist, Skulltones, Awesome Vistas, Almost Ready, Important, Animal Disguise, Mt.St.Mtn, CITY and their own cassette imprint Folding. Hospitals' Adam Stonehouse and Erase Errata's Bianca played on the first album, one of them founded Henry's Dress, another plays in the Yikes with Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer, and they've created one of the best bands of our time - the truly unmissable Sic Alps.

Support comes from two hotshit new Leeds bands; the Spectoresque 'Spectrals' - who have releases coming up on Blank Dogs' Brooklyn based label Captured Tracks and from bonafide weirdos Rent Boys, an unsettling garage punk racket with a single due on Brighton's Sex is Disgusting Records.

You'll also be able to pick up the new issue of Niche Homo for cheap and hear the swell selections of Soft Skeleton Podcast DJs.

Wednesday 7th October - at the Fenton, 161 Woodhouse Lane. 8pm, Five pounds in.
