Hail Satan

chiaroscuro [Edit] [Delete] 12:19, 11 September '06

At the moment, I can't stop listening to black metal.

I haven't exactly gone off hardcore but there's only so far it can go in terms of intensity. Or pure unadulterated evil.

Yet this prediliction raises all sorts of political and ethical questions. I generally stay away from music which I consider conservative, and especially that which specifically espouses right wing ideology. While certain satanic metal acts, for instance Deathspell Omega, seem to espouse a radical political intervention with more philosophically in common with the left than the right, a lot of black metal, especially in post-Communist Eastern Europe, is tied up with militant nationalism, so called 'neo-pagan' rejection of Judaeo-Christian orthodoxy, and in some cases, specifically neo-Nazi ideology.

So, has anybody else encountered the wonders of the Satanic metal underground? And is it acceptable to listen to, for instance, Burzum, knowing Varg Vikernes is an unapologetic Nazi, not to mention a psychopathic murderer?
