you start off with the tonic.

then you:

move to the subdominant

or

move to the subdominant in the BASS but hold the tonic over the top!

or

move to the subdominant, but make it major seventh for added FUNK

this chord change is MADDENINGLY OVERUSED IN MODERN MUSIC.

obviously i'm talking about C to F, or C to C/F, or C to Fmaj7, but i wanted to put it in general terms and sound like i knew what i was on about, which i don't.
