Joanna Newsom @ Seattle

TheNo [Edit] [Delete] 16:31, 6 December '06

First, apologies for starting another JoNu thread, but seeing as *this* one is not intended for debating her singing voice (specifically), I figured it valid.

Just got back from the US where, as a last-night thing, I caught Joanna Newsom's show at the Showbox in Seattle. It was fucking incredible.

She played some Milk Eyed Mender stuff solo, and then all of Ys with the accompaniment of guitar, banjo, tambura (kind of like a mandolin, I spose) and percussion which shadowed Van Dyke Parks' arrangements on the record.

I was concerned when I saw the stage set for such malarkey (had assumed they were for boyf Bill Callahan, who supported), but it really worked. Oh fuck, did it work. Beforehand, my impression of Ys was that it is impressive, expansive, but a little distant. This made it all feel so warm, so tactile. I left thinking *this* is how the record should have been recorded - how could the London Sinfonetta show possibly top this?..

That's all - I am not going to attempt a bonafide review; as much as anything else, I am jetlagged all to fuck. But if anyone can find a boootleg of aany shows on her current tour, lemme know.
