Hi, I'm pretty sure there's a good few DIY maestros here, so I was wondering if anyone could shed some light:

When I mix something down to mp3 from the recording/tinkering stage, the result is way quieter than any regular mp3 of same bitrate etc. Why is this? Am I forgetting to do something or is this where mastering comes in?
