Horrible Music Documentaries

Soul Britannia - how to ruin wrightylew's favourite type of music in an hour's worth of documentary

I love learning about any kind of old music before the 70s, be it jazz, soul, folk, anything.

What I don't love, is having not only the know-nothing narrator, but also these complete nobodies making mega generalisations about 'the time'.

These BBC documentaries are all the same with music. They always bring politics into it at any given moment. They also always seem to infer that musical movements CHANGED THE NATION. Bullshit. I could find you a million old people who'd never heard of half the people these programmes talk about.

Eric Burdon was the worst. First of all, its worth noting that he was one of many very lucky people, making it in a covers band, riding in the wake of Beatlemania.
Secondly, one of the reasons he understood soul music was, as he said: "the fact my dad and his friends worked down the mines. They worked hard: like slaves. Also, they always came home with black faces from the soot. I felt like I was one of them. I felt like I lived in New Orleans."

Sickening. The BBC need to stop trying to romanticise everything with their rose-tinted nostalgic spin, and concentrate more on being informative, than undermining people like myself with silly tales about revolutionary mods, changing the world.
