Ryan Adams in Manchester

wrightylew [Edit] [Delete] 17:07, 16 November '07

I wasn't far back. Row N, which was good.

He came on at about 8.30, and played an amazing set. Blistering. FULL of Gold and Heartbreaker tracks, and one from the rest. Obviously didn't play anything from RnR (despite shouts for 1974).

Then at about 9.15, something happens to his guitar and there's a big delay. Neal Casal was like 'hold on guys, we won't be a sec'.

Obviously, the silence was interrupted every few seconds by the odd "Ryan you're God!" or just "woo!" shout. But then some fucking genius decided to do the good old "summer of 69!" heckle.

Wow. Talk about fly off the handle. Casal was like "Ok stop saying stupid shit, dudes." Ryan walks up to the mic and he's like, "I know you think that was really funny and intelligent and stuff, but you know what? Your bad karma isn't gonna affect my good karma, cos I know where I'm at and I'm ok. I'm ok with the fact you've got so much bad karma, but you're gonna get so much shit one day.

"You want everyone to know what a fucking asshole you are, so here: now's your chance. Fucking tell me what you think of me, and then FUCKING LEAVE. I'm an adult. I can TAKE it."

Then they played Bartering Lines. The intro got a great reception, but he whispered the entire song. Rubbish. Then they went off.

Then they returned. He had another go at the guy. Neal played two songs, Ryan played Let it Ride, slow. Then they did a gigantic outro for Easy Plateau.

"That was our last song. Bye."

Terrible. They had no interest post-heckle. Awful, awful way to end the gig. Ten minutes of boring jamming to a song that isn't exactly a crowd pleaser.

Everyone was disappointed. I don't think I want to see him again. Twice now, he's let me down. I've payed about £70 towards seeing him live in the past two years, and both times, he's disappointed.

Good points: Rescue Blues, Stars Go Blue, Peaceful Valley, and the fact his voice was absolutely stunning

Bad points: the fact that in order to adapt his old songs to the Cardinals' sound, he has to make them loud. See: Please Do Not Let Me Go. Loses a lot of its impact when its well loud.

All in all: 6/10. So much potential wasted because he spat his dummy out.
