Amusement Parks On Fire

I couldn't remember if APOF were loved or loathed by DiS and the music elite. So as my typical wtf choice browsing the used bins, I am very pleased with this self-titled record. (DiS, I'll add, have made my 'wtf' choices a lot better, btw.)

You're all dying to know. (Yeah, you in the corner there. I'm gonna give ya the thirty second review. Whether ya like it or not!) Or maybe you aren't. ;-)

As a big fan of the shoegazer thing, I am easily disappointed by latecomer's attempts at the genre. Many have tried to adopt the Slowdive, MBV, early Catherine Wheel sounds but with little success. So it's with some surprise this little known London(?) band combines the right elements of hazy guitars and fuzzy production without succombing to the traps of post-rock boredom. A lesser band might be content to repeat the same two notes ad nauseum and call it a day. APOF avoid the pitfall by adding just the right amount of pop sensibilities to turn noise into music. As luck would have it, Michael Feerick writes damn good songs. And as this record was the freebie of my buy three-get-one-free, I feel as though I've been doubly rewarded. This record fucking rocks big time. 8.5/10
