Hip Hop / Dance about to take over our airwaves once more?

blaaast [Edit] [Delete] 03:12, 14 April '08

I had a curious look at the top 40 singles a moment ago and I was quite surprised with what I found.

The top 40 singles is largely made up of hip hop and dance music. This can only be a good thing.

With hip hop taking over the mainstream as it did in the earlier part of this decade (circa 2004?) they were less pissy little 'indie' bands kicking about. I thought the chart was full of these bands at the moment but it seems not. Top 5:

1) Estelle feat. Kanye West
2) Sam Sparro
3) Flo-Rida feat. T-Pain
4) Madonna feat. JT
5) Mariah Carey

This indicates a re-resurgence. I don't mind this stuff being in the mainstream, I know the bands I listen to won't be clogging the airwaves but I hate it when crap bands (see: Pigeon Detectives, The Twang etc) do.

Arctic Monkeys and Scouting for Girls are the only bands that feature in the top 20. Maybe I'm being pretty harsh on the Arctic Monkeys as they are a far greater band that that Scouting for Girls tripe but I can't help but lump them in together. Infact, maybe the Arctic Monkeys shouldn't be lumped in with the likes of the Pigeon Detectives. Who knows?

Thoughts?

I don't expect this thread to get many replies.
