Do you have to hear supposedly 'seminal' albums at the time of their release to fully appreciate the

This is pretty much brought on by an article I've just read all about Loveless, and the now legendary process involved in making it

Now, up until now I've not bothered exploring this album or MBV, as I've (probably foolishly) thought that it might all be a bit lost on me. I guess Screamadelica might be a better example of what I'm talking about, as that is apparently more representative of a specific point in British music culture. And then there's the stuff that's stood the test of time, such as Pet Sounds, What's Going On, Never Mind the Bollocks...

So is it possible to enjoy these kind of albums as a first time listener years after their release as much as those about to experience it first time around? Or is context one of the most crucial aspects of albums such as these?

This isn't 'research' for a dissertation or anything btw, in case you think I'm all scamming you
