What's the etiquette on this?

This thread's inspired by the large percentage of the crowd at the New York Dolls' gig in Glasgow last Sunday wearing New York Dolls tee shirts.

Is it better or worse than wearing a band tee of a differant band?

And is it more acceptable for some bands than others?
